Mr Geoff Smart M.B.E. – Heart Link Chairman

Geoff has been Chairman since 1988 and I have been Treasurer since Heart Link began in 1981.

Our daughter Amanda was born with a heart condition, which required surgery at two days old.  As she was born at the Leicester Royal Infirmary, she was transferred to Groby Road Hospital for her operation.  Geoff was able to go with her, whereas I had to stay at the LRI as at the time no midwives attended Groby Road Hospital for newly delivered mums.

Groby Road Hospital offered no parent accommodation, so Geoff slept on two chairs put together, or on the floor. “No room at the Inn” was quite true, but this sowed a seed of thought which grew into the formation of Heart Link.

The saying “from little acorns, big oak trees grow” is just what has happened with Heart Link over the last 32 years.  We were part of the ECMO programme from the very start with Mr R Firmin and Andrew Sosnowski.  ECMO has been proven beyond all expectations and has become renowned worldwide.

Geoff was awarded the M.B.E. for services to charity through Heart Link, of which he is very proud. But without your help fundraising we would not be able to carry on.  So far well over £4 million has been raised, so please keep up the good work.
